The Gamecock Disc Golf Club and its members like to spend their time off the course giving back to the community. Along with helping keep the local courses cleaned and maintained, we try to spread the good nature of the sport throughout our community.
This winter we teamed up with the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission to teach an eight week course on the basics and rules of disc golf to athletes who competed in the South Carolina Special Olympics Mid-Winter Games. We had a great time and look forward to working with the ICRC and the Special Olympics in the future.
Last year, three of the athletes chose disc golf as the sport they would compete in at the 2010 Mid-Winter Games. Michael Brooks brought home a bronze medal and Sean Litteral and Veronica Welsh won silver medals. In addition to helping them learn and improve their disc golf skills, we were also able to lobby the PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) for some new discs for the athletes. They were more than willing to help out and gave us 20 brand new discs, including one for each of the athletes to take home and a bunch more for the program to keep for future classes.
