Model United Nations is an organization that seeks to promote international co-operation and diplomacy, as well as educate members about the role and function of the United Nations. This is primarily accomplished by attending various Model United Nations conferences. Typically, prior to attending a conference, each university will be assigned one or two countries to represent in various committees. Students will then select the committee that they find most interesting and prepare to represent the assigned country in that committee. Before attending a conference, it is essential that each student research the assigned country's history and actions that it has taken related to the committee's topics. At the conference, this knowledge is used to bring clear plans of action to the floor. Students can then work with representatives of other nations to compose draft resolutions, which are debated and strengthened before the entire body of the committee. Through the formation of diplomatic alliances and civil debate, university students from across the country - and often even from other nations - are able to immerse themselves in an environment that clearly demonstrates the great potential that exists for international understanding in forums such as the United Nations.
The Model United Nations organization at the University of South Carolina was revived in January 2006 by several devoted students. Since then, the club has accrued many more dedicated members, and sent representatives of the university to the 2006 and 2007 Southern Regional Model United Nations conference. As always, the club is looking to expand its membership and to attend more conferences throughout the country. Also, we will be hosting our own conference in the spring for students both from the University of South Carolina and from local high schools. More information about this conference can be found
