What is Phi Sigma Pi?
Today, more than ever, Phi Sigma Pi is an integral and functional part of the college experience. It encompasses every field of higher education without emphasizing any particular field of study. This coeducational national honor fraternity recognizes outstanding scholarship and leadership and promotes fellowship among its members.
Phi Sigma Pi is 1/3 Honor Society, 1/3 Service Organization, and 1/3 Social Fraternity. It's best described as a dynamic organization that seeks to incorporate the best and most beneficial aspects of these three elements into its own purpose and structure.
Phi Sigma Pi is founded on a tripod of Scholarship, Leadership, and Fellowship. Without the support of one of these elements, the other two will falter. Scholarship is addressed by requiring our members to have between 12-95 semester hours and a 3.0 or better GPA. Unless you are a transfer student, you must be an undergraduate at USC for at least one semester to be eligible. Seniors are not eligible for initiation, either (graduating in less than a year). Active participation in service projects fosters Leadership, the second leg in our tripod. Working with others towards a common goal addresses the third and final leg, Fellowship.
History
Phi Sigma Pi was founded at Central Missouri State University in 1916 by a small group of men. The fraternity became national in 1921 and has since evolved from an honorary professional fraternity to a professional education fraternity and then, in 1966, to an honor fraternity for all disciplines. The fraternity became coeducational in 1977. Since its founding, Phi Sigma Pi has chartered chapters all over the U.S. Thus far, over 19,000 students, alumni, and faculty in 50 institutions have met the standards for membership in Phi Sigma Pi.
Purpose
As an honor fraternity founded on superior scholarship, Phi Sigma Pi vows to advance academic ideals. The fraternity also serves as a common social ground that encourages close friendships among its brothers. In carrying out the purpose of the fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi inspires its members to:
•Acquire and disseminate KNOWLEDGE through Scholarship
• Apply professional skills through LEADERSHIP
• Foster fraternal FELLOWSHIP
